Back in the land before time when there was no time, jingle writer Chip Davis (now the force behind unstoppable musical juggernaut Mannheim Steamroller) was asked to come up with a country song for a bakery in Sioux City. The popularity of the tune spurred a single, which begat more singles leading to “Convoy,” written to support/capitalize on a trucker’s strike. The song is the rambling discourse of a trucker who is joined by fellow bigriggers as they make their way across the country, travelling well over the speed limit while avoiding cops, toll booths, and weight scales. The song went to number one on Billboard’s Country/Pop charts and inspired Sam Peckinpah’s shocking, blood-soaked 1971 motion picture of the same name.
Yeah, we definitely got us the front door good buddy,
Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy
Handy when forming groups, also can be used in a disparaging manner.
