BurningMan Prankery!

Larry Harvey, as the central figure in the power structure behind the BurningMan enterprise, is a natural target for ridicule. Even more provocative is the accepted notion that he has NO ability to take a joke.

This was an elaborate prank staged by several persons. I was only a fringe participant. I can't take credit for very much of the thought process. It is also briefly mentioned in an excellent analysis of BrunringMan's pending demise-

New fake covers were allpied to hundreds of used paperback books. They became Larry Harvey's wildly self-aggrandizing autobiography.

The books were given away at center camp, in a promotional event guest-starring 'Larry Harvey' (actually an impostor from within our ranks- the same one used for the sticker & flier pics). The ever-present 'Living Room On Wheels' was our stage for the performance.

The event was announced by bullhorn, using over-the-top circus barker rhetoric- which also included & enforced an exaggerated sense of awe toward "Mr. Harvey'.

  • "Step right up for a free copy of Larry Harvey's new book, written & published by Larry Harvey, including pictures OF Larry Harvey taken BY Larry Harvey! Single-file line, please, there's enough FREE BOOKS for everyone!"
  • "Mr. Harvey is HERE NOW, signing FREE copies of his new book..."
  • "Do NOT approach or speak to Mr. Harvey until instructed to do so!"

Mr. Harvey and his (dominatrix-ish) escort arranged themselves on the couch. His black-suited personal bodyguard stood to Harvey's left.. Additional security was provided by Disgruntled Postal Workers

Spectators were treated like cattle and the line was made to move quickly. Each spectator was frisked and interrogated as they stepped up onto the living room.
Once on board, spectators were asked to leave gifts for Mr. Harvey. Then a few quick commands from the dominatrix, being made to kneel etc., and they were given a book signed by 'Mr. Harvey' himself. All the while were constant admonitions not to touch Mr. Harvey, not to look directly at him, etc. as they were quickly shoved off the living room. "NEXT!"
Spectators were left with a fake book and a sense of wonder.

Many thought our Larry Harvey was real. Others maintain that the real Harvey was watching from a distance.

Interestingly, some didn't know who Larry Harvey is.
Our impostor-Harvey was shown awe worthy of the Dalai Lama, much as the real Harvey has the unwavering dedication of a large band of awe-struck sycophants...
